Education names Dedrick as Golden Apple recipient

The 2011 Golden Apple Award was given to Millie Dedrick for being the outstanding Teacher who is an alumnus of Samford University.

Millie Dedrick is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources Management from Birmingham-Southern College, Master of Science and Education Specialist degrees in Elementary Education from Samford University. Currently she is a doctoral student in Educational Leadership at Samford. Millie is a second grade teacher at Vestavia Hills Elementary at Liberty Park. She is the recipient of the 2009 Teacher Recognition Award by the Vestavia Hills Rotary Club. As a teacher leader, Millie has served as a cooperating teacher for student teacher interns from Samford University, Auburn University, and as an External Evaluator for senior elementary education majors at Samford University. Millie is married to John A. Dedrick. They are proud parents to three children, Brian (Lyn), Brittany, and Tyler. She is the doting grandmother (Ommie) to “Angel” and Braxton.

FYNT Secondary Graduate Program Approved

The Alabama State Department of Education and Samford Board of Trustee members recently approved a Fifth-Year Non Traditional Secondary Graduate Program (FYNT) for the Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies. The FYNT Program is designed for graduates of an accredited university who already have a BA or BS degree with a certifiable major in a core teaching field and desire to earn a Class A teaching certificate to teach at the secondary level of education (grades 6-12). Samford will offer degree options in Biology, English Language Arts, General Science, History, Math, Social Science and Spanish. The first cohort is scheduled to begin this summer, and applications for admission are available now.

The Fifth-Year Non Traditional Secondary Graduate Program (FYNT) accommodates those working part or full-time, including those currently teaching with provisional certificates. Courses are offered in late afternoon, evening, or Saturdays.

Samford also offers fifth-year programs in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, as well as Music Education (P-12). Homecoming 2010 Highlight Video

This year’s homecoming was a great success! Not only did we have an excellent turnout for the BBQ, but the addition of the “Artsy, Not So Artsy” sale was a lot of fun as well as a great benefit for the school.

We are so thankful for everyone who played a role in making this year’s homecoming great. Without you all, there is no way we could pull this off!

And thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, eat, make a purchase, or do all three. We love being able to see old friends and make new ones. We hope to see you all again next year!

Gerhardt Elected Chair of AL Board of Examiners in Psychology

Clara Gerhardt (Family Studies) was elected Chair of the Alabama Board of Examiners in Psychology. Members of this board are nominated by the Governor of the State of Alabama. The Board oversees ethical issues as well as licensing of Psychology professionals within the State. Dr Gerhardt is serving her second term as a member of this board, and it is the second time that she chairs the board.

Jan Term Nutrition Course in Costa Rica

In January Term 2011, the Department of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is offering a nutrition course, “Food, Culture and Society in Coasta Rica”. The course is offered January 1-22 and the course description is as follows:

Experience the rich cooking traditions of Coast Rica as you participate in this study of Costa Rican language, culture and cuisine. You will save the melange of African, Spanish and Carribean influences flavored by tropical roots, grains, spices, oils, sauces, fruits and vegetables that make Coasta Rican food so unique. Form our base at the Conversa Language School in Santa Ana, we will explore the country from coast to coast, visit farms and Costa Rican families, brouse through local markets, sample Tico restaurants and participate in Costa Rican home cooking. You will fill your senses with the “sabor’ flavor of Costa Rica! No Spanish proficieny is required. Each student will enhance their individual language skills whether beginner or fluent Spanish speaker.
